Signs Of Kibr (Pride/Arrogance)
The Prophet (PBUH) said: “No one who has an atom’s-weight of Pride in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, what if a man likes his clothes and his shoes to look good?” He (PBUH) said, “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty, Pride means rejecting the truth and looking down on people”(Sahih Muslim).
Commentary:
The word or the name for arrogance/pride in Arabic is ‘Kibr’. This is the inner quality of pride. The name of the outward quality is ‘Takabbur’ which means arrogance.
Arrogance is a blameworthy characteristic that is the feature of Iblees and his followers in this world, those on whose hearts Allah Ta’ala has placed a seal.
11 Signs of a Person Having Pride/Arrogance:
- He doesn’t like others to have what he has
- He cannot avoid anger
- He cannot avoid being jealous of others
- He doesn’t accept advice from others
- He doesn’t want to listen or accept advice from a learned person or even attend lessons
- When advising people he always puts them down
- When speaking he will say good remarks about himself
- When he speaks he speaks with pride to let people know he has knowledge
- He deals with people in a bad way
- He walks in a bad way
- He looks down on people because he is wealthier, or has a better appearance.
The cure for arrogance involves Knowledge and Action which involves the following remedies:
Firstly, you should know and recognize your Lord and know and recognize your own self as you should be recognized, and that you are not worthy of greatness and that true greatness and pride are only for Allah Ta’ala
Secondly, you should think of yourself as being just like other people and realize that they are like you; they were born from a mother and a father just as you were, and that Taqwa (piety, fear of Allah) is the true criterion of superiority.
Allah Ta’ala says (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, the most honorable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. he is one of the Muttaqoon (the pious)” (Al-Hujuraat, 49:13)…
And finally, know and realize that on the Day of Resurrection the person with pride will be gathered in a small form like an ant which will be trampled underfoot as The Prophet (PBUH) said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the arrogant will be gathered like ants in the form of men. Humiliation will overwhelm them from all sides. They will be driven to a prison in Hell called Bawlas, with the hottest fire rising over them, and they will be given to drink of the juice of the inhabitants of Hell, which is teenat al-khabaal” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi).
Arrogant people are hated by other people just as they are hated by Allah Ta’ala; people love humble, tolerant, and gentle people, and they hate those who are harsh and cruel to people.
And Allah knows best!
Arrogance And Racism
We are told in the last sermon of our prophet(saw) to: “Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things”.
Mankind’s softest spot where Satan can easily attack is our Ego (kibr). What the Quran and hadith say about it.
“One does not enter Jannah (paradise) who has in his heart a mustard seed’s weight of Kibr”.(ahadith)
Kibr (ego, pride) is rejecting the truth and belittling people.”
.Surely Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful [Quran 4:36]
“And do not turn your nose up to people, nor walk pridefully upon the earth. Surely Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful. [31:18]
Without a doubt, Allah knows what they conceal and what they reveal. He certainly does not like those who are too proud. [16:23]
…So Today you will be rewarded with the torment of disgrace for your arrogance throughout the land with no right, and for your rebelliousness “[46:20]
I will turn away from My signs those who act unjustly with arrogance in the land. And even if they were to see every sign, they still would not believe in them. If they see the Right Path, they will not take it. But if they see a crooked path, they will follow it. This is because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them. [Quran 7:146]
Racism
The following scene took place on a BA flight betweenJohannesburg and London. A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a black man.
Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air Hostess. Madam, what is the matter, the hostess Asked
You obviously do not see it then? she responded. You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to someone from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat.
Be calm please, the hostess replied. Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available. The Hostess went away and then came back a few minutes later.
Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available seats in the economy class. I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the business class. All the same, we still have one place in the first class.
Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued. It is not usual for our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit in the first-class, However, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone so disgusting.
She turned to the black guy and said. Therefore, Sir, if you would like to, please take your hand luggage because a seat awaits you in the first class. At the moment, the other passengers who were shocked by what they had just witnessed stood up and applauded.
All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black, nor a black has any superiority over a white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is the brother of another Muslim and that Muslims constitute one brotherhood.
Ahadeeth on ASSABIYYAH (nationalism, tribalism, racism etc.)
“He is not of us if he calls to assabiyyah, and he is not one of us if he fights for the sake of assabiyyah, and not one of us if he dies on assabiyyah.”
Everyone shall taste death…this life is a period of trials and tests then we shall return to (Allah) to get what we deserve: Paradise or Hell.
He (Allah) has created death and life, that He may test which of you is the best in deeds. He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving. [Quraan 67:2]
Arrogance As A Human Nature Vice
A very important characteristic that everyone has to be cautious about, especially those people who are seeking knowledge: who have been blessed by Allah to have knowledge and involved in da`wah work. These people have to be very careful about a disease that often afflicts people of this nature, unfortunately, and this is the disease of kibr, of arrogance and pride. And sometimes the way this is reflected is where the person refuses and does not want anyone to correct him, or at least he will not accept correction from certain people.
He may accept correction or be told that he is wrong by someone who is from his group, someone who is a close friend of his, but if it is anyone else, he will look down upon, and he will not accept any kind of criticism, and this is pride and arrogance, as described in the Hadith of the Prophet (pbuh).
The Prophet (pbuh) said that no one who has even a mustard grain seed weight of arrogance in his heart, will enter paradise.
When someone asked the Prophet (pbuh), he said that a man loves to have nice clothing on, put shoes…, and he shows off this is arrogance; the Prophet (pbuh) said, “Allah is beautiful and loves beauty,” viz this is not arrogance, but arrogance is “to reject the truth and to look down upon the people”, to reject the truth for example when it comes to you from a source you do not like, when it comes to you from someone perhaps who is not as much upon the right path as you think you are, and to look down upon other people and to disgrace them, this is arrogance.
You have to realize that, I don’t care if you are the biggest scholar in the world, you could make a mistake sometimes, that some child could come up to you and say, you know, that was a mistake. This is something that we have to be very careful about especially as I said when we are involved in da`wah and in imparting knowledge.

Hues Of Arrogance
‘ARROGANT? Who, me?! Never. I’m a Muslim.’
Any Muslim who has studied Qur’an and Sunnah in depth and detail would strive to stay away from one of the most disliked vices: Arrogance. Be it vanity, conceit, standoffishness, haughtiness, acting holier-than-thou, or “high-and-mighty” – they are careful of being tainted by any color from the spectrum of arrogance or Kibr. These negative personality traits were present in those on whom Allah’s wrath descended in the past, and about whom the followers of Islam have been duly warned in the Qur’an and Sunnah.
The crux of the matter is: how do we check ourselves in practical life if we are becoming arrogant or not? What actions, qualities or behavior constitutes the hallmarks of “arrogance”? It is so much easier to nod our heads in unison when listening to warnings targeted at arrogant individuals at a lecture, than to actually purge ourselves from traces of arrogance within our own behavior; in our social interactions; in our dealings with family members; in our very intimate thoughts and feelings. What can we do to hold up a magnifying glass to our own face, in order to pick out the microscopic, self-emulating zits that are missed by that first cursory glance at our personalities?
Rejecting Islam
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “No one who has an atom’s-weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.”
A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, what if a man likes his clothes and his shoes to look good?”
He said, “Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty. Arrogance means rejecting the truth and looking down on people.” (Sahih Muslim)
Rejecting any part of the Qur’an or Prophetic narrations silently (i.e. not saying anything outwardly, but obstinately refusing to obey Allah’s commands over time) or by open antagonism – verbally declaring Kufr and rejection – is indicative of arrogance. Pharaoh, who is repeatedly quoted in the Qur’an for his arrogance, said: “O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? Am I not better than this one (Moses), who is Mahin (i.e. has no honor nor any respect, and is weak and despicable) and can scarcely express himself clearly?” (Qur’an, 43:51-52)
“O chiefs! I know not that you have an ilah (a god) other than me…” (Qur’an, 28:38)
“I am your lord, most high.” (Qur’an, 79:24)
Arrogance: The Barrier To Paradise
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever has an atom’s worth of kibr (pride and arrogance) in his heart will not enter Paradise.” So a man said: What about a person who loves (i.e. takes pride in) wearing beautiful clothes and beautiful shoes? So he replied: “Indeed Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Kibr is to reject the truth and to despise the people.” (Sahih Muslim, 1/65)
So Allah informs us that the Hellfire is the abode of those who have kibr (pride and arrogance). And we learn from the (above) hadith that: “Whoever has one atom’s worth of kibr in his heart will not enter Paradise.” So this is proof that kibr necessitates entry into the Hellfire and prevents entry into Paradise. And this comprehensive explanation that the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned has clarified the meaning of kibr in the dearest possible manner. So he divided kibr into two types:
1. Kibr against the truth
This is to reject the truth and not accept it. So anyone who rejects the truth is proud and arrogant – in accordance with what he rejects. So it is obligatory upon everyone to humble themselves to the truth that Allah sent His Messenger with, and (the truth) He sent down in His Book.
Those who, out of pride and arrogance, do not comply with the Messengers (i.e. do not believe in them and their message) are disbelievers and they will eternally dwell in the Hellfire. This is because they rejected the truth that the Messengers brought to them with clear signs and proof. They are prevented from accepting it because of the kibr they harbor in their hearts. Allah said:
“Verily, those who dispute about the Signs of Allah, without any authority having come to them, there is nothing else in their breasts except pride.” (Qur’an, 40:56)
Those who, out of kibr, do not comply with parts of the truth, because it opposes their personal opinions or desires, are not disbelievers. But their action necessitates punishment in accordance with what they have of kibr. This is why scholars have agreed that whenever a sunnah of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) has been explained to someone, it is not lawful for him to turn away from it giving preference to the saying of someone else – whoever the someone else may be.
Therefore, it is obligatory for students of knowledge to give complete and absolute precedence to the saying of Allah and the saying of His Messenger (peace be upon him) over and above the saying of anyone else. He should make that the basis to which he returns, and the foundation upon which he builds. He must try his best to follow the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him) inwardly and outwardly and strive hard to understand what is intended from it.
