The Day Of Aashura (10th Muharam ) And Historical Events
Although the month of Muharram is a sacred month as a whole, the 10th of Muharram is the most sacred of all its days.
The day is named ‘aashurah’. it is one of the most important and blessed days of allah ta’ala in the Islamic calendar. This day has been accepted as having deep significance. evidence of its significance has been clearly found in authentic traditions.
There are many prophetic events of great historical importance and also events that happened after the beloved and final messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had left this world, such as the battle of Karbala, that have taken place on this day.
The importance of the month of Muharram has been mentioned in the Qur’an in surah taubah verse 36. This day of Ashura derives its importance from prophetic traditions. in the ahadeeth (sayings of rasulullah sallallaho alaihe wassallam) the following have been mentioned :
Fasting
The prophet Muhammad(sallallahu-alaihe wasallam) has exhorted and encouraged his ummah to fast on this day. He said: ” This fast is a compensation for the (minor) sins of the past year ” ( hadith: Muslim )
The prophet Muhammad (PBUH), when migrated to Madinah, found that the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram. They said that it was the day on which the prophet Musa (Moses), alaihe salam, and his followers crossed the red sea miraculously and the pharaoh was drowned in its waters. On hearing this from the Jews, the prophet, sallallahu alaihi wassallam, said, “We are more closely rotated to Musa, alaihi salam, than you, and directed the Muslims to fast on the day of “Ashura”. ( hadith-abu Dawood)
“Observe the fast of Ashura and oppose the Jews. Fast a day before it or a day after.” (hadith: baihaqi)
Hence, it is important to either fast on the ninth and the tenth or the tenth and the eleventh of Muharram.
Being Generous
One should be generous with one’s family and dependents and spend more on them than what is normally spent.
Rasulullah ( sallallahu-alayhi-wasallam) said:” One who generously spends on his family on the day of Aashora, Allah will increase (his provision) for the whole year.” ( hadith: baihaqi )
Historical Events
There is no doubt about the blessedness of the day of Ashura. Many historical events of deep significance have also been recorded on this day.
Hazrat Musa (as) and his people, the Bani Israel, were saved from the Egyptian pharaoh by the miracle of the parting of the sea on the day of Ashura. it was for this reason that the Jews used to fast on this day.
The tragic battle of Karbala was also fought on this day. This event has many important lessons for the ummah (Muslim nation), especially at this point in time when the ummah is being maliciously targeted and persecuted just because of their attachment to and love for Islam.

Muharram – One Of The Four Sacred Months
Muharram’ is the first {1st} month of the Hijri calendar and is one of the Four [4] sacred months concerning which Allah {Aza wa Jall } says in the Quran:- ‘Surely the number of months with Allah is twelve {12} months in Allah’s ordinance since the day when He created the heavens and the earth, of these four being sacred; that is the right reckoning; therefore be not unjust to yourselves regarding them. ‘Ashura’~ [meaning tenth [10th ] in Arabic] {The 10th of Muharram}
Fasting on the 10th of Muharram Ashura was obligatory for Muslims before the fasts of Ramadan were obligatory.
Narrated by the Mother of the Believers Aisha (Allah be pleased with her):- The people used to fast on ‘Ashura’ {the tenth (10th)day of the month of Muharram} before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory. And on that day the Kaaba used to be covered with a cover. When Allah made the fasting of the month of Ramadan compulsory…
Allah’s Apostle {may peace be upon him} said:- ‘Whoever wishes to fast (on the day of Ashura) may do so, and whoever wishes to leave it can do so. [Source:-‘Bukhari’ Vol 02, Book 026, Hadith # 662]
The Fast of Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.
Abu Qatada al-Ansari (Allah be pleased with him) reported that….. The Messenger of Allah {may peace be upon him} was asked about fasting on the day of Ashura {10th of Muharram} at which point he said:- It expiates the sins of the preceding year. {Source:-Muslim: Book 06: Hadith # 2603}
Muharram And Aashura
Every year, when the blessed month of Muharram enters, we are reminded of certain incidents: The Hijrah, The Day of Aashura, and The Martyrdom of Sayyidina Husain (R.A). These are generally the topics of discussion in the month of Muharram and Insha-Allah, something will be said with respect to each one.
The Hijrah
During the Khilafat of Hazrat Umar (R.A), Islam had spread far and wide and there was a need to have some kind of date for the correspondence that was being sent out. Hazrat Umar (R.A) thus consulted with the Sahaaba-e-Kiraam (R.A) as to when the calendar should begin. Different views were presented before Hazrat Umar (R.A) wisely declared that the calendar begin with the Hijrah.
Many lessons are taken from this decision :
In this month of Muharram, we are reminded of the great sacrifices made for the Deen of Islam. Rasulullah and his companions had to leave their beloved Makkah Mukarramah, their homes, and even their families, and that too after a long and trying period of immense persecution, torture, and trials. The month of Muharram delivers us to the days of Rasulullah and we see the many trials and difficulties that the Beloved of Allah Ta’ala underwent. As we turn the pages of history, we see the three solid years of ostracism that were so patiently endured, despite the extreme and severe conditions, where food and drink and other necessities of life were cut off from the Muslims.
We take a glimpse at the grief and sorrow that burdened the heart of Rasulullah when his beloved wife, Hazrat Khadija (R.A) passed away; his support and his companion through those trying times. Then followed the loss of his uncle, Abu Talib, who had also been a means of support and protection. The year was thus called ‘The year of grief.
We turn another page and we behold the cruel experiences that Nabi endured in Taif: The rejection, the scorn, the mockery, and the stoning. …Of whom? The greatest after Allah Ta’ala. And as we turn more pages of history, we read of the culmination of all the evil plans and plots, with the decision to assassinate Rasulullah. This was the setting that opened the door to the Hijrah. Family, property, land …everything was sacrificed on the instruction of Allah Ta’ala to migrate from Makkah Mukarramah to Madina Munawwarah.
Life was a constant struggle: Overcoming one obstacle meant being confronted by another and yet another – but there was no losing hope, no despondency. Just absolute trust and unwavering faith in Allah Ta’ala. On every occasion, there was the assurance that Allah Ta’ala was with us. …How beautiful and comforting the words of Rasulullah to Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) during their perilous stay in the cave of Thaur… “Don’t be sad. Verily Allah is with us.”
So these incidents – which run into thousands – are lessons for mankind till the Day of Qiyaamah, more especially, we who are Muslims.
Reflecting over that period of struggle and we learn that if we say that we believe and that we have submitted, then we too will face different challenges, tests and trials, toil and struggle, and sacrifices will have to be rendered for this Imaan and for this beautiful Deen of Islam.
At the same time, each incident offers consolation to us all: If Rasulullah and his faithful companions could have undergone such severe trials, then what are our trials in comparison?
Life in this world will never be smooth sailing. There will always be some tests and some kind of sacrifices. For many of us, it is the small test of getting up for Fajr or giving up sins. What great sacrifice is there in this? Compare it to the sacrifices of the Sahaaba-e-Kiraam.
In today’s time, a little difficulty comes the person’s way and the person gives up his Deen; a little test and the person accepts another religion.
Our lives will offer us a share of struggle: The tests we face are sometimes in our home life, sometimes with family or neighbors, sometimes in business, and sometimes at the schools, colleges, and universities … but we should keep before us these exceptional incidents from the life of Rasulullah and the lives of his noble companions, of sacrifice and endurance against all odds.
Fasting In Shawwal & Muharram
[9. Surah Tauba : Ayah 129]
Allah is sufficient for me, there is no god but He; on Him do I rely, and He is the Lord of mighty power.
Fasting in Shawwal & Muharram
[Sahih Muslim : Book 6 Kitab Al-Sawm, Number 2614]
Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (Radi Allah Anhu) reported Allah’s Messenger (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) as saying: He who observed the fast of Ramadan and then followed it with six (fasts) of Shawwal. it would be as if he fasted perpetually.
[Sahih Muslim : Book 6 Kitab Al-Sawm, Number 2612]
Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu) reported that He (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) was asked as to which prayer was most excellent after the prescribed prayer, and which fast was most excellent after the month of Ramadan. He said: Prayer is offered in the middle of the night and the most excellent fast after (fasting) in the month of Ramadan is the fast in God’s month al-Muharram.
Our Lord! surely we have heard a preacher calling to the faith, saying: Believe in your Lord, so we did believe; Our Lord! forgive us, therefore, our faults, cover our evil deeds, and make us die with the righteous.

Muharram And Aashurah
MUHARRAM is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Muharram means “Forbidden.” Even before Islam, this month was always known as a sacred month in which all unlawful acts were forbidden, prominently the shedding of blood. It is one of the four sanctified months about which Allah Ta’ala says: “The number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve, so ordained by Allah, the day He created the heavens and the earth; Of them four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so wrong not yourselves therein.” (Surah Tawbah – verse 36)
The four sanctified months according to authentic Ahaadeeth are the months of Zul- Qa’dah, Zul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. The sanctity of these months was observed in the shariah of all the previous Prophets. “Allah Ta’ala made them (i.e. the four months) sacred and increased their sanctity. Hence He declared a sin therein more severe and increased the virtue of good deeds and the reward thereof.” (Ibn Katheer Vol.2)
The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadhaan is the fast during Allah’s month of Muharram and the best of Salaah besides the Faraaidh (obligatory salaah) is the Tahajjud Salaah (performed after midnight). (Muslim, Vol. 1)
THE DAY OF ASHURA( 10 TH OF MUHARRAM)
The Tenth of Muharram, known as the day of Aashura, is a very significant day in the Islamic Calendar. Nabi(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) has exhorted the Ummah to fast on this day. Hadhrat Aaisha(rahiyallahu anha) reports that Nabi(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) ordered the observance of the fast of Aashura.
