The Importance Of Fajr Prayer
It is easy to understand how the idea of Muslims praying five mandatory prayers a day is misunderstood to mean that they pray only those five observances and no more.
Muslims should know the great status of fajr in the sight of Allah. Allah (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning) “Establish regular prayers at the sun’s decline till the darkness of the night, and the recital of the Quran in the Fajr prayer, for the recital of the fajr, is witnessed” (Al-Israa 17:78)
In addition, The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Whoever prays the fajr prayer in congregation, it is as if he (or she) had prayed the whole night long.” [Muslim & Tirmidhi].
Now, to show the seriousness of missing this prayer, we present the hades of the prophet (PBUH) “the most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are Isha and Fajr, but if they only knew what they contain, they would come even if they had to crawl.” [Ahmad]
The Fajr (dawn) prayer is amongst the most important acts of worship, being one of the five obligatory prayers. unfortunately, many of us have become so used to missing it at its prescribed time – which ends at sunrise – that we have forgotten its position in our religion, and barely feel anything is wrong when we wake up in the morning for work or school without having performed the fajr prayer. on the other hand, if one of us was to miss a job interview or a flight, we all know how disappointed he or she would feel the fajr (dawn) prayer is amongst the most important acts of worship, being one of the five obligatory prayers.
Do not let satan benefit from his actions. do not put off a good that you intended to do as you never know how much reward you might receive from the hardships you encounter while trying to achieve that good.
Easy Actions Equal In Reward To Hajj
Muslim reported that the Prophet, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said, “?Hasn’t Allah made for you Salat Al-`Ishaa’ in congregation equal to Hajj, and the Fajr prayer in congregation equal to `Umrah.”
“Whoever walks to an obligatory prayer in congregation, it is like Hajj, and whoever walks to a voluntary prayer, it is like a voluntary `Umrah.” (Saheeh Al Jaami`, 6432)
“Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until the Sun rises, then prays two units of prayer, he will receive the reward of Hajj, and `Umrah – complete, complete, complete.” (Saheeh Al Jaami`, 6222)
It is authentically reported that people said, “O Messenger of Allah! The rich took the reward of akhirah, they do Hajj and we do not; they engage in jihaad, and we do not. So the Prophet, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, said, “Shall I not guide you to something that, if you stick to it, you will come with what is better than what one of them will come with: that you say Allahu Akbar 34 times, and Subhan Allah 33 times, and Alhamdulillah 33 times, at the end of every prayer.”
“When one prays for one’s brother, the angel says: ‘Amin, and for you the same.'” (Saheeh Al Jaami`, 2143) So pray for your brother pilgrim that Allah accepts his Hajj and gives him its reward.
A Place In Jannah Everyday
A PALACE IN JANNAH EVERYDAY
Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “Whoever performs 12 Rakaats of Salaat in one day excluding the Fardh Salaat, he will be granted a house in Jannah.” (Sahih Muslim Hadith1691)
These 12 Rakaats have been specifically enumerated in another narration as: the 2 Rakaats before Fajr, 4 Rakaats before Dhuhr, 2 Rakaats after Dhuhr, 2 Rakaats after Maghrib and 2 Rakaats after Esha. (Sunan Tirmidhi Hadith415). This Hadith is authentic according to Imaam Tirmidhi.
On the day of Qiyaamat, if there be any deficiency in a person’s Fardh Salaat, his Nafl Salaats will compensate for that. (Sunan Tirmidhi Hadith413) ? Imaam Tirmidhi has classified this narration as sound.
Therefore, utmost care should be taken in correcting and perfecting our Fardh Salaat by fulfilling all its requirements as well as by being particular of performing the Sunnah Salaat.
The 2 Rakaat Sunnat before the Fardh of Fajr Salaat is the most emphasised Sunnah Salaat of the day (Bukhari Hadith1169, Sahih Muslim Hadith1683, Tahtaawi pg.212) Sayyidatuna Aaisha (Radhiallaahu Anha) reports that Rasulullah r said. “The 2 Rakaats before Fajr are better than the entire world and whatever it contains.” (Sahih Muslim Hadith1685)
Regarding the 4 Sunnats before Dhuhr, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) mentioned that the doors of the heavens open at that time (Sunan Tirmidhi) and if one follows it up with 4 more Rakaats after the Fardh of Dhuhr (2 Sunnats and 2 Nafl – Fathul Qadeer vol.1 pg.387) Almighty Allah will protect him from Jahannum. (Sunan Tirmidhi Hadith427; Sahih ibn Khuzaymah Hadith1190)
If a person performs 4 Rakaats before Asr Salaat, he will receive a house in Jannah. (Majmauz-Zawaaid vol.2 pg.222).
Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) has made a special Du’aa for the mercy of Allah to be showered on such a person. (Sunan Tirmidhi Hadith430; Sahih ibn Khuzaymah Hadith1193)
Makhool (RA) reports that Rasulullah r said, “If the 2 Rakaats after Maghrib are performed before speaking, it will be lifted high into the heavens. “(Al-Maraaseel of Imaam Abu Dawud Hadith73)
If a person performs 4 Rakaats (2 Sunnats and 2 Nafl) after Esha in the Musjid, he will receive the reward of performing these Salaats on Laylatul Qadr. This has been mentioned by various Sahaaba (Radhiallaahu Anhum) ? refer al-Musannaf of Imaam ibn Abi Shaybah Hadith7347 – 7353
To perform Witr Salaat is compulsory. Rasulullah r said, “Whosoever does not perform Witr Salaat is not among us.” (Al-Mustadrak vol.1 pg.305-306). Imaam Haakim has classified this narration as Sahih (authentic). (Ibid, also refer to Nasbul-Raayah vol.1 pg.112)
Bearing in mind the above mentioned virtues, every Musallee should endeavour to acquire these benefits by remaining steadfast on the Sunnah Salaats regarding which people are becoming increasingly lax and unmindful these days. Doing so will acquire one the love and assistance of Almighty Allah. (Sahih Bukhari Hadith6502)
Fajr Prayer
The fajr (dawn) prayer is amongst the most important acts of worship, being one of the five obligatory prayers. Unfortunately many of us have become so used to missing it at its prescribed time, which ends at sunrise – that we have forgotten its position in our religion, and barely feel anything is wrong when we wake up in the morning for work or school without having performed the fajr prayer. On the other hand, if one of us was to miss a job interview or a flight, we all know how disappointed he or she would feel. Therefore I thought I’d prepare this article as a reminder to myself first, then to all my brothers and sisters.
Muslims should know the great status of fajr in the sight of Allah. Allah (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning) “Establish regular prayers at the sun’s decline till the darkness of the night, and the recital of the Qur’an in the fajr prayer, for the recital of the fajr is witnessed” (Al-Israa 17:78) In addition, the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever prays the fajr prayer in congregation, it is as if he (or she) had prayed the whole night long.” [Muslim & Tirmidhi].
Now, to show the seriousness of missing this prayer, we present the Hadeeth of the Prophet (PBUH) “The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are ishaa and fajr, but if they only knew what they contain, they would come even if they had to crawl.” [Ahmad]
The practical aspect of dealing with the problem includes a number of steps which we can take in order to get used to praying fajr regularly in congregation:
Having a sincere intention and being determined, when going to sleep, that you will get up for fajr
Remembering Allah as soon as you wake up. Allah’s Apostle (PBUH) said, “During your sleep, Satan knots three knots at the back of the head of each of you, and he breathes the following words at each knot, ‘The night is long, so keep on sleeping.’ If that person wakes up and remembers Allah, then one knot is undone. When he (or she) performs ablution (wudu) the second knot is undone. And when he (she) prays, all the knots are undone, and he (she) gets up in the morning lively and in a good mood, otherwise he (she) gets up dull and gloomy.” [Bukhary]
Sleeping early. According to an authentic Hadeeth, the Prophet (PBUH) used to dislike sleeping before ishaa and talking after it. The kind of talk that is discouraged in this case, as the commentators explain, is that in which there is no clear benefit. However, if it is for good reason, such as studying, speaking to a guest, or spending time with one’s family, then there is nothing wrong with it. This has no connection with the reasons for which many people stay up late nowadays, to do wrong and commit sins.
Family members should encourage one another, and likewise roommates sharing the same apartment.
If you know a friend who normally wakes up on time, ask him or her to give you a call at prayer time. I have been using this technique on and off for quite some time now, and have found it to be extremely effective.
If you find that you switch off the alarm clock then go back to sleep, you might want to place it a few feet from your bed. This way you will actually have to get up and walk to the clock in order to turn it off.
Try using an alarm clock with the snooze feature.
Avoid eating too much before going to bed. Overeating makes you fall into a deep, heavy sleep.
Finally, true devotion to Allah is the best thing to motivate a person to get up for prayer, because Allah alone controls all means of help. I ask Allah Almighty to facilitate this prayer for us, and to guide us to what pleases Him.
