Not Performing The Prayer

Allah, the Most High, says, {But after them there followed a posterity who missed Prayers and followed after lusts soon, then, will they face destruction, except those who repent and believe, and work righteousness.} (Maryam: 59-60)

Commenting on the above verses (Ayat), Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) said, “Allah’s statement, ‘Who missed Prayers does not mean that they did not perform it at all, but rather they did not perform it in its due time.”

Remembrance And Supplication

Reading the Quran frequently
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Amaama al- Baahilee (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa salam, say: “Read the Quran, as it will come on the day of resurrection as an intercessor for its devotees.” [Muslim: 1874]

Beautifying one’s voice in the recitation of the Quran
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa salam says: “Allah does not listen to a prophet as He listens to a prophet who recites the Qur’an in a loud and pleasant tone.” [Agreed upon: 5024 & 1847]

Always remembering Allah
It is narrated on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa salam would remember Allah at all times. [Muslim: 826]

Temptations Of Worldly Life, Diversion From Remembrance Of God

[ALLAH’S Quran – 102:1] “(Mankind! your) vying with one another to excel in multiplying worldly possessions diverts you (from God and true values of life),”

The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) has said :
[Bukhari, Book #59, Hadith#374] “Narrated Uqba bin Amir: Allah’s Apostle offered the funeral prayers of the martyrs of Uhud eight years after (their death) as if bidding farewell to the living and the dead, then he ascended the pulpit and said, “I am your predecessor before you, and I am a witness on you, and your promised place to meet me will be Al-Haud (i.e. the Tank) (on the Day of Resurrection), and I am (now) looking at it from this place of mine. I am not afraid that you will worship others besides Allah, but I am afraid that worldly life will tempt you and cause you to compete with each other for it.” That was the last look which I cast on Allah’s Apostle.”

Burden Some Bad Company

BOOKS written by eminent Islamic scholars are replete with sayings that indicate an aversion to people who are referred to as being thaqeel, which means burdensome. They are a people whose company is unbearable. Imam Ahmad said they are the people committing acts of innovation. Some have said they are the foolish ones in society, and others have stated they are people with coarse personalities, or that they are people of lifeless and colorless character.?

“They are as blocks of wood propped up.” (Qur’an, 63:4)

“So what is wrong with these people that they fail to understand any word?” (Qur’an, 4:78)

Imam Ash-Shafi’ee said: “When a dull person comes to sit with me, I begin to feel that the earth beneath him is sinking from the heaviness of his company.”

Al-A’mash, upon seeing this kind of person, would recite: “Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!” (Qur’an, 44:12)

Allah, the Almighty, said: “And when you see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur ‘an) by mocking at them, stay away from them…” (Qur’an, 6:68)

People who are devoid of virtues, who have low aims, and who easily succumb to their desires are among the most unbearable of people to share company with.

“Then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them.” (Qur’an 4: 140)

A poet said: “Your company upon me is heavy, heavy, heavy. You are in appearance a man yet an elephant in terms of bad company.”

Ibn al-Qayyim said: “If you are forced to converse with someone who is unbearable, lend him your body and deny him your spirit, and travel away with your soul. Lend him a deaf ear and a blind eye until Allah makes a way for you to depart from his company.”

“And obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, one who follows his own lusts and whose affair (deeds) has been lost.” (Qur’an 18: 28)

Remember Allah Unceasingly

[ALLAH’S Quran – 33:41 ] “O YOU who have attained to faith! Remember God with unceasing remembrance,”

The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) has said:
[Muslim – Book #003, Hadith #0724] “’A’isha said: The Apostle of ALLAH (may peace be upon him) used to remember ALLAH at all moments.”

[Bukhari – Book #76, Hadith #486] “Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said ALLAH will give shade to seven (types of people) under His Shade (on the Day of Resurrection). (one of them will be) a person who remembers ALLAH and his eyes are then flooded with tears.”

[Bukhari – Book #93, Hadith #502] “Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “ALLAH says: ‘I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.”

[Muslim – Book #035, Hadith #6471] “Abu Huraira reported ALLAH’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying that ALLAH, the Exalted and Glorious, thus stated: I am near to the thought of My servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him as he remembers Me. And if he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My Heart, and if he remembers Me in the assembly I remember him in assembly, better than his (remembrance), and if he draws near Me by the span of a palm, I draw near him by the cubit, and if he draws near Me by the cubit I draw near him by the space (covered by) two hands. And if he walks towards Me, I rush towards him.”

Allah Loves Constant Deeds

[Sahih Bukhari: Volume 8, Book 76, Number 472 & 470]
Narrated ‘Aisha (Radi Allah Anha): The Prophet (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) was asked, “What deeds are loved most by Allah?” He said, “The most regular constant deeds even though they may be few.”

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu): Allah’s Apostle (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) said, “The deeds of anyone of you will not save you (from the (Hell) Fire).” They said, “Even you (will not be saved by your deeds), O Allah’s Apostle?” He said, “No, even I (will not be saved) unless and until Allah bestows His Mercy on me. Therefore, do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and worship Allah in the forenoon and in the afternoon and during a part of the night, and always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course whereby you will reach your target (Paradise).”

“Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of ALLAH: for without doubt in the remembrance of ALLAH do hearts find satisfaction.”

The Excellence Of Remembrance

Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) says:
{Therefore remember Me, I will remember you and be grateful to Me, and never be ungrateful to me}, [Soorah al-Baqarah, Aayah 152]

{O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance}, [Soorah al-Ahzaab, Aayah 41]
{And for men and women who engage much in Allah’s remembrance, for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward}, [Soorah al-Ahzaab, Aayah 35]

{And bring your Lord to remembrance in your [very] soul, with humility and remember without loudness in words, in the mornings and evenings; and be not of those who are unheedful}, [Soorah al-A’raaf, Aayah 205]

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) said:
((The comparison of the one who remembers Allah and the one who does not remember Allah, is like that of the living and the dead)), [al-Bukhaaree with al-Fat.h 11/208 and Muslim 1/539]

He (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) also said:
((Should I not inform you of the best of deeds, and the most sanctifying of deeds before your Lord, which does more to raise your positions [with Him], and are better for you than the disbursement of gold and money or battle with the enemy?))
They [the companions] said: “Indeed! Inform us.”
He (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) then said:
((Remembrance of Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala))), [at-Tirmidhee 5/459 and Ibn Maajah 2/1245, see: Saheeh Ibn Maajah 2/316 and Saheeh at-Tirmidhee 3/139]

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) also said:
((Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) says: “Indeed I am as My servant presumes Me to be, and I am with him when he remembers Me, so if he remembers Me to himself I remember him to Myself, and if he remembers Me amongst a company I remember him amongst a company greater than it, and if he draws near to Me the span of a hand I draw near to him the span of an arm, and if he draws near to Me the span of an arm I draw near to him the span of two outstretched arms, and if he takes a step towards Me I hastily step towards him”)), [al-Bukhaaree 8/171 and Muslim 4/2061, this specific wording is related by al-Bukhaaree]

On the authority of ‘Abdullaah Ibn Busr (radhi-yallaahu ‘anhu): “A man said to the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam): “O Messenger of Allah, the rites of Islam are much for me, so tell me of something that I might hold fast to”
He (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) said:
((Let not your tongue cease from the remembrance of Allah)), [at-Tirmidhee 5/458 and Ibn Maajah 2/1246, see: Saheeh at-Tirmidhee 3/139 and Saheeh Ibn Maajah 2/317]

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) also said:
((Whoever recites a letter of Allah’s Book has for it, a merit and ten more like it, not to say that alif, laam, meem are one letter but rather alif is a letter, laam is a letter and meem is a letter)), [at-Tirmidhee 5/175, see: Saheeh at-Tirmidhee 3/9 and Saheeh al-Jaami’ as-Sagheer 5/340]

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) also said:
((Whoever takes a seat and fails to remember Allah, has incurred upon himself a loss from Allah, and whoever lies down [relaxes] and fails to remember Allah, has incurred upon himself a loss from Allah)), [Abu Daawood 4/264 and others, see: Saheeh al-Jaami’ 5/342.]

Our Goal In Life

All Praise is for Allah, and peace and blessings of Allah be upon His beloved Messenger Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

We are grateful to Allah subhana wa ta’ala for giving us the opportunity to sit in His remembrance. For truly it is a great favor indeed that despite all worldly distractions He has brought us to His House (mosque). Then sat us in His dhikr. And by sitting in His dhikr Allah subhana wa ta’ala helps us to get closer to Him and for every Muslim the true goal in life is to attain the pleasure of Allah subhana wa ta’ala.

Apart from that we all have a common interest, that we would all like to love Allah subhana wa ta’ala and we ourselves would like to be loved by our Lord Most High.

Now is it not strange that a person has a certain desire or goal in life but doesn’t make any effort to achieve it?
Surely it is a basic rule in this world that when a person has a particular interest or hobby, he does not waste any time. He spends most of his time in an activity that will help him achieve his goal. For example if a person wants to be good at a particular sport, he would play that sport very regularly and often spend a lot of money and time on trying to achieve his objective.

So truly if our objective in life is to be loved by Allah, and we also know that this can happen through doing His dhikr in abundance, then why is it that we not make ourselves busy in His remembrance?

The formula for achieving this is straightforward, Allah subhana wa ta’ala has stated in the Qur’an ‘Fadhkurooni adhkurkum’ (Remember Me and I will remember you). It is stated in a Hadeeth that Allah remembers His servant as soon as he remembers Allah.

Subhan Allah, can you imagine the Lord Most High, The creator of the Heavens and the Earth remembering you? Indeed that is great thing. And this method for achieving our objective is so easy that it almost defies belief.

In a Hadeeth transmitted by Bukhari it is stated that Abu Hurayrah radhiallah anhu narrated that Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said “Allah Almighty says, ‘I am towards My servant as he is towards Me. I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me alone, I remember him alone. If he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it.”
