Surah Al-Fatihah Ki Taseer
TAG: Al-Fatiha
Allah’s Response To The Believer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. [Quran 1:1]
When Allah’s sincere servant says: All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the universe! [Quran 1:2]
Allah the Highest says: My servant has Praised Me.
When Allah’s sincere servant says: The most Merciful, the Most Beneficent! [Quran 1:3]
He (Allah the Most High) says: My servant has lauded Me.
When Allah’s sincere servant says: Master of the Day of Judgment! [Quran 1:4]
He (Allah the highest) says: My servant has glorified Me. [My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me.]
When Allah’s sincere servant says:
You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help! [Quran 1:5]
He (Allah the highest) says: This is Between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.
When Allah’s sincere servant says:
Guide us to the Straight Path! The path of those upon whom You have bestowed Your blessings! Not the path of those who earned Your wrath, or erred and went astray. [Quran 1:6-7]
He (Allah the highest) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) has said:
[Muslim, Book #004, Hadith #0775] “Abu Huraira reported: The Apostle of Allah (may peace Be upon him) said: If anyone observes prayer in which he does not recite Umm al-Qur’an, It is deficient [he said this three times] and not complete. It was said to Abu Huraira: At times we are behind the Imam. He said: Recite it inwardly, for he had heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace Be upon him) declare that Allah the Exalted had said: I have divided the prayer into two halves Between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks. When the servant says: Praise Be to Allah, the Lord of the universe, Allah the Highest says: My servant has Praised Me. And when he (the servant) says: The Most Compassionate, the Merciful, Allah the Highest says: My servant has lauded Me. And when he (the servant) says: Master of the Day of judgment, He remarks: My servant has glorified Me. and sometimes He would say: My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me. And when he (the worshiper) says: Thee do we worship and of Thee do we ask help, He (Allah) says: This is Between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Then, when he (the worshiper) says: Guide us to the straight path, the path of those to whom Thou hast Been Gracious not of those who have incurred Thy displeasure, nor of those who have gone astray, He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Sufyan said: ‘Ala b. ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Ya’qub narrated it to me when I went to him and he was confined to his home on account of illness, and I asked him about it.”
[Malik’s Muwatta, Book #3, Hadith #3.10.41] “Yahya related to me from Malik from al-Ala ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Ya’qub that he heard Abu’s-Sa’ib, the mawla of Hisham ibn Zuhra, says he had heard Abu Hurayra say, “I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, ‘Whoever prays a prayer without reciting the umm al-Qur’an in it, his prayer is aborted, it is aborted, it is aborted, incomplete.’ So I said, ‘Abu Hurayra, sometimes I am behind the imam. ‘He pulled my forearm and said, ‘Recite it to yourself, O Persian, for I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say that Allah the Blessed, the Exalted, said, “I have divided the prayer into two halves Between me and my slave. One half of it is for Me and one half of it is for My slave, and My slave has what he asks.” ‘The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Recite.” The slave says, ‘Praise Be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.’ Allah the Blessed, the Exalted, says, ‘My slave has Praised Me.’ The slave says, ‘The Merciful, the Compassionate.’ Allah says, ‘My slave has spoken well of Me.’ The slave says, ‘Master of the Day of the Deen.’ Allah says, ‘My slave has glorified Me.’ The slave says, ‘You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help. ‘Allah says, ‘This ayat is Between Me and My slave, and for My slave is what he asks. ‘The slave says, ‘Guide us in the straight Path, the Path of those whom You have blessed, not of those with whom You are angry, nor those who are in error. ‘ Allah says, ‘These are for My slaves, and for my slave is what he asks .’ ”
Surah Fatihah – Theme (Maududi)
This Sura is in fact a prayer that Allah has taught to all those who want to make study his book. It has been placed at the very beginning of the book to teach this lesson to the reader: if you sincerely want to benefit from the Quran you should offer this prayer to the Lord of the Universe. This preface is meant to create a strong desire in the heart of the reader to seek guidance from the Lord of the Universe who alone can grant it. Thus Al- Fatihah indirectly teaches that the best thing for a man is to pray for guidance to the straight path to study the Quran with the mental attitude of a seeker- after-truth and to recognize the fact that the Lord of the Universe is the source of all knowledge. He should therefore begin the study of the Quran with a prayer to him for guidance. From this theme, it becomes clear that the real relation between Al-Fatihah and the Quran is not that of an introduction to a book but that of a prayer and its answer. Al-Fatihah is the prayer from the servant and the Quran is the answer from the Master to his prayer. The servant prays to Allah to show him guidance and the Master places the whole of the Quran before him in answer to his prayer as if to say This is the Guidance you begged from Me.

Encouraging Children To Pray
In a Hadith narrated by Abdullah Ibn Qart the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “The first act that the servant of Allah will be accountable for on the Day of Judgment will be prayer. If it is good, then the rest of his acts will be good. And if it is evil, then the rest of his acts will be evil.” (Tabarani) Furthermore, prayer was the first act of worship that was made obligatory by Allah. Therefore, due to its extreme importance to the Believer, prayer should be one of the first acts of worship that parents should teach their children.
When discussing teaching children how to make prayer parents typically ask when it is necessary to begin teaching their children. Let us be realistic; learning how to perform prayer is not easy for children or in some cases adults. It can take a lot of work to master even the simplest elements of prayer. The learner must memorize the various du’a and Surahs of the Qur’an – not to mention the other required portions of the prayer. Furthermore, there must be work on proper pronunciation and rules on how, when, and what makes prayer valid. This is not an overnight process but rather one that takes time. Therefore, this leaves us with the question – when should children learn how to perform prayer?
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, narrated that the Apostle of Allah,(PBUH), said, “Command your children to start prayer when they become seven years old, and spank them for it (prayer) when they become ten years old, and arrange their beds (to sleep) separately.” (Abu Dawud).
This does not mean that parents can only start teaching their children how to perform it when they reach the age of seven. Rather, informal instruction should start when a child starts to show an interest in prayer, which usually occurs around the age of two. It is only human nature that children love to imitate their parents. In fact, this is one method that Allah has provided us for teaching our youth.
Therefore, it is important for parents of small children to let them “pretend” to perform the prayer alongside of the parents. The benefits of this are twofold. First, it teaches children that it is necessary to perform prayer every day five times a day. And second, it helps children learn the physical movements of the prayer. It really is amazing how fast a two-year-old will learn the phrase Allahu-Akbar (Allah is Greatest) when he performs prayer alongside his parents!
The next step is to teach your child Al-Fatihah (The Opening Chapter of the Qur’an). This should begin around the age of three or four. When teaching children Surahs or any other portions of the prayer that must be memorized it is important to remember to break down the instructions by using a reasonable number of verses or small segments.
In other words, teaching a child how to perform the prayer should be done progressively in small steps. It is important to practice reciting the previously learned material consistently every day along with any new material. These practice sessions should only last between 5 to 15 minutes. At this age, length of practice is not as important as consistency.
Lastly, one of the most important aspects of successful teaching is praise and encouragement. Remember that children like to please their parents. Also, it is really important that parents praise and celebrate their children’s accomplishments. This is especially true for learning how to perform prayer. After the mastery of a section, children typically feel a strong sense of achievement. Praise motivates the child to continue to learn and accomplish new goals.
Simple Words That Protect From Every Harm
Khawlah Bint Hakim narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever arrives somewhere and says: ‘I seek refuge with Allah’s complete Words from the evil He has Created (A’oodhu bi-Kalimaathillaahi- Ath-Thaammaathi min-Sharri maa Khalaq),’ nothing will harm until he leaves that place.” (Sahih Muslim, no. 2708)
In Taysir Al-Aziz Al-Hamid (p. 146), Sulayman Bin Abdullah relates that Al-Qurtubi commented on this by saying:
“And this is true and real, and I believe in it due to the textual proof as well as my own experience. Since I heard this narration, I would constantly act upon it and nothing was able to harm me until I left it.
One night, I was stung by a scorpion in Al-Mahdiyyah (a province in Tunisia). So, I thought to myself until I realized that I had forgotten to seek refuge using these words.”
In Al-Qawl Al-Mufid (1/155), Al-Uthaymeen commented on this Hadith:
“This protection is from all human and jinn devils – whether they are visible or invisible – until the person leaves that place. And there is no way that what is described in this narration will not take place, as these are the words of the truthful one who is believed (i.e. the Messenger of Allah)!
However, if what is mentioned in this narration does not take place, it is because of a preventative factor and not because of a deficiency in the method itself or the narration.
This also applies to anything that the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned as a Shar’ee method in which the desired outcome is not achieved. So, this is not because of a fault in the method and is rather because of the presence of an obstacle that is blocking the desired outcome.
For example, reciting ‘Al-Fatihah’ for a sick person is a form of healing. Some people recite it and find that the sick person is not healed.
This is not because of a deficiency in this method and is instead because there is something present that is preventing this method from bringing about its desired effect.
Another example is mentioning Allah before having sexual intercourse in order to prevent Satan from harming the future child.
Some people will mention Allah and find that Satan still ends up harming the child due to something that is preventing this effect from being achieved.
So, you should check yourself to figure out what the obstacle is so that you can remove it and experience the effect of the method.”
The Virtues of Reciting Some Surahs of the Qur’an
Here are some benefits of reciting certain Surahs (chapters) in the Qur’an:
Surah Al-Fatihah (1)
Once the Prophet (peace be upon him) was traveling when he disembarked and began walking alongside a companion.
He asked him, “Shouldn’t I tell you the best part of the Qur’an?” Then he recited “Alhamdu lillahi rabbil alameen” (Praise be to Allah, The Cherisher and Sustainer of the Alamin (mankind, jinn, and all that exist). (The first verse in Surah Al-Fatihah; (1:1)
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Whoever masters the first seven (chapters or verses) from the Qur’an is a great scholar.”
Also, Prophet Muhammad said: “In the Fatiha of the Qur’an, there is a cure for all maladies (illnesses).”
Surah Al-Baqarah (2)
Prophet Muhammad said: “The Qur’an and those who committed themselves to it will be presented on the Day of Judgment, preceded by Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah Al-Imran.”
Prophet Muhammad also said: “Learn how to recite Surah Al-Baqarah for there is a blessing in it, and there is sorrow for abandoning it, and it is unbearable for the idle and that Al-Baqarah and Al-Imran are like two flowers which will shade those who learned them by heart on the Day of Judgment as if there were two large clouds or two flocks of birds.”
Also, Prophet Muhammad said: “Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in your dwellings and do not turn them into graves.
He also said that whoever recited Surah Al-Baqarah at night would be crowned with a crown of Paradise.”
Prophet Muhammad said: “Do not make your house as graves, for Satan shuns a dwelling wherein Surah Al-Baqarah is recited”
Prophet Muhammad was asked, “Which part of the Qur’an is the best?” He replied, “The Surah in which the cow is mentioned.”
He was then asked, “Which part of that Surah?” He replied, “The verse of the Throne (Ayat Al-Kursi) and the last part of Surah Al-Baqarah came down from under the Throne.”
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Whoever recites four verses from the first part of Surah Al-Baqarah, the verse of the Throne, two verses after the verse of the Throne and three verses from the last part of Surah Al-Baqarah, Satan would never come near him or the members of his family on that day, and nothing he despises would come near him or the members of his family, and never are these verses recited over a madman without him regaining his sanity.”
