Our Lord Grant Us What Is Good
[Quran 2:201] “And among them are those who pray, “Our Lord, grant us in the world what is good, and in the Hereafter what is good, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) has said:
[Bukhari, Book #75, Hadith #398] Narrated Anas: The most frequent invocation of The Prophet was: “O Allah! Give to us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the fire.”
What Do Muslims Believe About Allah?
What do Muslims believe about Allah?
- He is the one God, Who has no partner.
- Nothing is like Him. He is the Creator, not created, nor a part of His creation.
- He is All-Powerful, absolutely Just.
- There is no other entity in the entire universe worthy of worship besides Him.
- He is First, Last, and Everlasting.
- He is the All-Knowing, and All-Merciful, the Supreme, the Sovereign.
- It is only He Who is capable of granting life to anything.
- He sent His Messengers (peace be upon them) to guide all of mankind.
- He sent Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the last Prophet and Messenger for all mankind.
- His revealed the Qur’an – the only remaining authentic divine book in the world that has been kept without change.
- Absolutely nothing is hidden from Him. He knows what is in our hearts.
Some basic guidelines Muslims follow in their knowledge of God:
- Eliminate any anthropomorphism (human qualities) from their conception of Allah. His attributes are not like human attributes. His names and attributes suit His Majesty.
- Have unwavering faith in exactly what Allah and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described Allah to be, no more, no less.
- Believe totally in all the names and attributes of Allah; one cannot believe in some and disbelieve the others.
- Similarity in names (or meanings) does not imply similarity in what is being described (referents). His speech is nothing like human speech, etc.
Solution: Morals Of the Holy Qur’an
There are people who are persecuted and tortured to death: innocent babies, people who cannot even afford a loaf of bread, who sleep in cold weather, in tents and even on the streets, who cannot afford medical treatment, or who, despite being old and weak, have to wait for hours, or even days, for hospital care, people who are killed just for belonging to a certain race, women, children and old people who are thrown out of their homes because of their religion, enormous extravagance alongside poor people suffering from starvation and neglect, who are just left to die, children too young and defenseless to be able to look after themselves, children who leave school to work or beg for money to help their families survive, people who live with the constant fear of being slaughtered by their enemies.
Everybody is aware of the existence of such people as these. Almost every day we come across pictures of these helpless, miserable, homeless, and needy people in the papers or on TV. Many people see their plight and pity them. However, they then either turn off the channel they have been watching, or else they turn over the pages of the newspaper they have been reading and forget they exist once more.
Most people never think that they have to make an effort to save these people from the terrible conditions they live in. They ask, “Is it up to me to save these people when there are so many rich and powerful people in the world?” and leave the responsibility to others.
However, prosperity and power alone are not enough to save these people and to make this world a place where justice, peace, security, and well-being prevail. For instance, despite the existence of many rich and developed countries in the world, people in Ethiopia are still dying from hunger. That people are still going hungry despite the present advanced state of technology and the many resources in the world is a clear indication that wealth and power by themselves are not enough.
In order for wealth and power to be used for the well being of these poor and needy people, first of all, we have to be conscientious. The sole way of being conscientious is through belief. Only if people who believe consistently and act conscientiously can there be a solution to injustice, chaos, terror, massacres, hunger, poverty, and oppression. The one solution is the morals of the Qur’an.
When we look at the problems in the world in general, we see that they are all caused by feelings such as hatred, malice, antagonism, self-interest, selfishness, indifference, and cruelty. The way to finding a solution to these and eliminating them lies in love, compassion, mercy, pity, the zeal to serve without expecting anything in return, sensitivity, sacrifice, brotherhood, tolerance, reason, and wisdom. These traits are only found in those who fully live by the morals in the Qur’an. In one of His verses, Allah refers to the Qur’anic aspect of leading people out of darkness to light:
” . . . Indeed there has come to you from Allah a light (Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) and a plain Book (this Qur’an). Wherewith Allah guides all those who seek His Good Pleasure to ways of peace, and He brings them out of darkness by His Will unto light and guides them to the Straight Way (Islamic Monotheism).” (Al-Ma’idah 5:15-16)
In another verse, Allah states that everything which conflicts with the Qur’an will end in corruption and confusion:
“And if the truth had been in accordance with their desires, verily, the heavens and the earth, and whosoever is therein would have been corrupted! Nay, We have brought them their reminder, but they turn away from their reminder.” (Al-Mu’minun 23:71)
At the very moment you are reading this, millions of poor people are either suffering, or trying to avoid dying from hunger or cold. Or else they are being torn away from their homes, families and children, and forced to leave their homelands.
For this reason, conscientious people must think about all this and act as if these troubles, adversities, and hardships had befallen themselves or their loved ones. Or they must look for ways to help those who ask for spiritual or material help. In the following verse, Allah orders conscientious and faithful people with common sense to assume this responsibility:
What reason could you have for not fighting in the way of Allah – for those men, women and children who are oppressed and say, “Our Lord, take us out of this city whose inhabitants are wrongdoers! Give us a protector from You! Give us a helper from You!” (An-Nisa’ 4:75)
The most important thing for Muslims to do is to struggle in the intellectual domain so that the morals of the Qur’an prevail against lack of religion. The only salvation for the weak, helpless, homeless, and destitute is the widespread practice of the morals of the Qur’an by all the people of the world. For this reason telling people about the morals in the Qur’an and communicating the message is a very important and pressing way of worshipping for all Muslims. As is also stated in the Qur’an : “And Our duty is only to convey plainly (the Message).” (Ya-Sin 36:17).
Those who do not use their consciences, who behave indifferently and uninterestedly towards orphans, the poor, and the unhappy, who spend the possessions given to them on vain things in the life of this world, who coldly watch women, children and old people under oppression, who feel happy at the spread of all kinds of immorality and ugliness in the world, and who encourage this point of view, will certainly account for all that in the hereafter as Allah says in the following verses:
Have you seen him who denies the Recompense? That is he who repulses the orphan (harshly) and urges not on the feeding of Al-Miskin (the poor). So woe to those performers of Salat (prayers) (hypocrites). Those who delay their Salat. Those who do good deeds only to be seen (of men). And withhold Al-Ma’un (small kindnesses like salt, sugar, water). (Al-Ma`un 107:1-7)
Follow The Path Of Knowledge
[Quran – 19:76] “God strengthens in guidance those who have sought and found guidance. The righteous, good deeds of lasting merit are best in your Lord’s sight for reward, and best for returns.”
The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) has said:
[Anas bin Malik, Al-Hadis, 1:351] “Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as reported by Anas bin Malik, “He that follows the path of knowledge shall find Allah easing the path to Paradise for him.”
[Muslim, Book #035, Hadith #6518] “Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection, and he who finds relief for one who is hard pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter, and he who conceals (the faults) of a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother, and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur’an (among themselves) there would descend upon them the tranquillity and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah makes a mention of them in the presence of those near Him, and he who is slow-paced in doing good deeds, his (high) descent does not make him go ahead.”
Serve Islam
“Yes, but whoever submits his face (himself) to Allah (i.e. follows Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism) and he is a Muhsin (good-doer i.e. performs good deeds totally for Allah’s sake only without any show off or to gain praise or fame, etc., and in accordance with the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger Muhammad Peace be upon him ) then his reward is with his Lord (Allah), on such shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.”
(Sura Baqarah: #112)
How to Serve Islam
1 SERVE ISLAM: By having a correct resolve and sincere intention, for Allah blesses an action that is done sincerely for His sake alone, even if it is little. Sincere devotion, if it becomes a constant feature of acts of worship and obedience, even if they are small or simple in the sight of the one who does them, makes them great in the sight of Allah, so Allah will forgive him for major sins because of that, as it says in the hadith about the piece of paper on which is written La ilaaha ill-Allaah.
2 SERVE ISLAM: By knowing the right way and following it. The Straight Path means following the way of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with regard to the principles, ways and means of da’wah and being patient in adhering to that, whilst treating people with kindness and compassion, because they are suffering from the disease of sin.
3 SERVE ISLAM: By making the most of all available means and circumstances. This is a great blessing, for all means are permissible except those which have been forbidden by Allah. So we call people to Allah, by all means prescribed in sharee’ah, whilst paying attention to the evidence of sharee’?ah and correct etiquette.
4 SERVE ISLAM: By giving precedence to that which is in the interests of Islam over your own whims and desires. Serving this religion means giving what is most precious of your money, effort, time, thought, etc. Have you not seen those who love sport (football or soccer) for example, how they devote their efforts, time and money to their beloved sport? But more is expected of you than that.
5 SERVE ISLAM: By following in the footsteps of the scholars, daa’iyahs and reformers, having patience as your companion and putting up with tiredness and exhaustion. For you are doing a great act of worship which is the mission of the Prophets and Messengers and those who follow in their footsteps.
6 SERVE ISLAM: By shunning laziness, weakness and apathy, for this religion is the religion of resolve, ambition and courage, and its call is only harmed by laziness or reckless ignorance.
7 SERVE ISLAM: By connecting your heart to Allah and reciting a lot of du’aa and prayers for forgiveness, and persisting in reading Qur’an. There is nothing that is more effective in cleansing the heart and refreshing the soul, and making it active and energetic so that it will not get tired or bored, than remembering Allah much and drawing nearer to Him by means of obeying Him and doing naafil (supererogatory) acts of worship.
8 SERVE ISLAM: By forming bonds with scholars who practice what they preach, those who are known to be sincere and who are well established in jihad and supporting this religion. Marching under their banner and following their lead is very good and beneficial.
9 SERVE ISLAM: By organizing your time on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. There are actions which should be done every day, others which should be done every week, and others which should be done every month or every year.
For example, you should make da’wah to those whom you see every day and to those whom you see once a week. You may have a family gathering once a month, and there may be annual conferences, or journeys for Hajj or Umrah once a year, and so on.
10 SERVE ISLAM: By paying it some attention and giving it some of your time, thoughts and money, and making it your main concern.
So when you stand up, it is for Islam;
when you walk, it is for Islam;
when you think, it is for Islam;
when you give, it is for Islam;
when you sit, it is for Islam.
11 SERVE ISLAM: By hastening to contribute every time you find an opportunity to do good. Do not hesitate or delay or put it off.
All praises and thanks be to Allah, Lord of everything that exists. The most Gracious, the Most Merciful.Master of the Day of Judgment You (alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help.Guide us to the Straight Way The Way of of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor those who went astray. Ameen
Signs Of Weak Iman
1) Committing sins and not feeling any guilt.
2) Having a hard heart and no desire to read the Quran.
3) Feeling too lazy to do good deeds, e.g. being late for salat
4) Neglecting the Sunnah.
5) Having mood swings, for instance being upset about petty things and bothered and irritated most of the time.
6) Not feeling anything when hearing verses from the Quran, for example when Allah warns us of punishments and His promise of glad tidings.
7) Finding difficulty in remembering Allah and making dhikr.
8) Not feeling bad when things are done against the Shariah.
9) Desiring status and wealth.
10) Being mean and miserly, i.e. not wanting to part with wealth.
11) Ordering others to do good deeds when not practicing them ourselves.
12) Feeling pleased when things are not progressing for others.
13) Being concerned with whether something is haram or halal only; and not avoiding makroo (not recommended) things.
14) Making fun of people who do simple good deeds, like cleaning the mosque.
15) Not feeling concerned about the situation of Muslims.
16) Not feeling the responsibility to do something to promote Islam.
17) Being unable to deal with calamities, for instance crying and yelling in funerals.
18) Liking to argue just for the sake of arguing without any proof.
19) Becoming engrossed and very involved with dunya, worldly things, i.e. feeling bad only when losing something in terms of material wealth.
20) Becoming engrossed and obsessive about ourselves.
Listed Below Are Ways To Increase Our Iman
1) Recite and ponder on the meanings of the Quran. Tranquility then descends and our hearts become soft. To get optimum benefit, remind yourself that Allah is speaking to you. People are described in different categories in the Quran; think of which one you find yourself in.
2) Realize the greatness of Allah. Everything is under His control. There are signs in everything we see that points us to His greatness. Everything happens according to His permission. Allah keeps track and looks after everything, even a black ant on a black rock on a black moonless night.
3) Make an effort to gain knowledge, for at least the basic things in daily life e.g. how to make wudu properly. Know the meanings behind Allah’s names and attributes. People who have taqwa are those who have knowledge.
4) Attend gatherings where Allah is remembered. In such gatherings we are surrounded by angels.
5) We have to increase our good deeds. One good deed leads to another good deed. Allah will make the way easy for someone who gives charity and also make it easy for him or her to do good deeds. Good deeds must be done continuously, not in spurts.
6) We must fear the miserable end to our lives; the remembrance of death is the destroyer of pleasures.
7) Remember the different levels of akhirah, for instance when we are put in our graves, when we are judged, whether we will be in paradise or hell.
8) Make dua, realize that we need Allah. Be humble. Don’t covet material things in this life.
9) Our love for Subhana Wa Ta’Ala must be shown in actions. We must hope Allah will accept our prayers, and be in constant fear that we do wrong. At night before going to sleep, we must think about what good we did during that day.
10) Realize the effects of sins and disobedience- one’s iman is increased with good deeds and our iman is decreased by bad deeds. Everything that happens is because Allah wanted it. When calamity befalls us- it is also from Allah. It is a direct result of our disobedience to Allah.
Leaving Asr Prayer
Allah, the Most Perfect and the Most High has ordered His slaves to establish the prayers with due care. He has told us to take special care concerning the middle prayer, which is the Asr prayer. (This is the opinion
of the majority of the people of knowledge from the Companions and those after them, that the middle
prayer is the Asr prayer.) (Sharh us-Sunnah of al-Baghawee 2/232-237)
He, the Most Perfect and the Most High, says: “Guard strictly your prayers, and your middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devoutness.” (al-Baqarah 238)
He, the Most Perfect and the Most High, has warned us about being neglectful of them, due to wealth, family
and from other temptations of this world. He has particularized the doer of these actions with a severe
punishment, particularly regarding the Asr prayer.
He, the Most High, says: “So woe to the worshipers who are neglectful of their prayers.” (al-Maa’oon 4-5)
The Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h.) said: “Whoever misses the Asr prayer, it is as if he has lost his family and wealth.” (al-Bukhari 2/30, Muslim 626 and others) from the Hadith of Ibn Umar, (May Allah be pleased with him).
It is related from Aboo al-Mulaih Aamir Bin Usaamah bin Umair Bin al-Hadhalee, who said: “We were with
Buraydah in a battle on a cloudy day, and he said: ‘Be early with the Asr prayer, for the Prophet said: ‘Whoever leaves the Asr prayer, then his actions will be invalidated.'” (al-Bukhari 2/31,66, Ahmad 5/349-450, 357, 360,361, al-Baihaqee 1/444, al-Baghawee in Sharh us-Sunnah 329, and others.)
The Earth Belongs To Allah And His Apostle
Hadith1
Narrated Abu Huraira: While we were in the mosque, Allah’s Apostle came out to us and said, “Let us proceed to the Jews.” So we went along with him till we reached Bait-al-Midras (a place where the Torah used to be
recited and all the Jews of the town used to gather). The Prophet stood up and addressed them, “O Assembly of Jews! Embrace Islam and you will be safe!” The Jews replied, “O Aba-l-Qasim! You have conveyed Allah’s message to us.” The Prophet said, “That is what I want (from you).” He repeated his first statement for the second time, and they said, “You have conveyed Allah’s message, O Aba-l-Qasim.” Then he said it for the third time and added, “You should Know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to exile you from , this land, so whoever among you owns some property, can sell it, otherwise you should know that the Earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle.” (See Hadith No. 392, Vol. 4)
Sahih Bukhari Volume9, Book 85, Number 77
Hadith2
Narrated Abu Huraira: While we were in the Mosque, the Prophet came out and said, “Let us go to the Jews” We went out till we reached Bait-ul-Midras. He said to them, “If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land. So, if anyone amongst you owns some property, he is permitted to sell it, otherwise you should know that the Earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle.”
Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 53, Number 392
The Holy Prophet Muhammed Sallalaahu Alaihi wasallam holds the keys to the treasures of this word
Narrated ‘Uqba bin ‘Amr: The Prophet once came out and offered the funeral prayer for the martyrs of Uhud, and proceeded to the pulpit and said, “I shall be your predecessor and a witness on you, and I am really looking at my sacred Fount now, and no doubt, I have been given the keys of the treasures of the world. By Allah, I am not afraid that you will worship others along with Allah, but I am afraid that you will envy and fight one another for worldly fortunes.”
Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 56, Number 795:
The holy prophet Muhammed Sallalaahu Alaihi wasallam could also see the sacred fountain of Kawthar from his pulpit which we will see if we go to heaven, (Inshallah) , May Allah guide us with a means of guidance , May Allah forgive our sins through the wasila of the Holy Prophet Muhammed Sallalaahu Alaihi wasallam
A Living Language
The Qur’an was able to hold the Arabic language in thrall from the moment it was revealed. Indeed its haunting rhythms rocked the whole Arabia from Sudan to Syria and from Morocco to Oman.
While the Qur’an continues to occupy the pedestal as an abiding model for literary Arabic, the languages of other scriptures had all become dead.
In fact, Arabic has defied the usual norms of the evolution of languages through history. The French scholar Ernest Renan (1823-1894), who had carried out extensive research on Semitic languages, had this to say about the Arabic language:
The Arabic language is the most astonishing event of human history. Unknown during the classical period, it suddenly emerged as a complete language. After this, it did not undergo any noticeable changes, so one cannot define for it an early or a late stage. It is just the same today as it was when it first appeared (quoted by Khan).
In acknowledging this “astonishing event of human history” this French Orientalist, was in fact acknowledging the miraculous nature of the Qur’an. It was the Qur’an’s phenomenal literary style which preserved the Arabic language from alteration, such as other languages have undergone.
A Challenging, Transformational Book
There is no other book in human history that has molded, and is continuing to mold, the life of generations of people as the Qur’an.
Every verse of the Qur’an has become the unalterable source of a code of laws that govern every aspect of the life of Muslims.
This was a book that reformed and refined the lives of thousands of Bedouins who could not think of anything beyond the confines of their clans before; a book that transformed the camel-herds of Arabia into Caliphs and learned judges; a book that brought into being the renowned universities and centers of learning that awakened a new enlightenment in the world, such as no other civilization of the past could match.
Muslims consider it a brilliant and lasting miracle of God because Prophet Muhammad’s only source of inspiration for the revolution he brought about was the Qur’an.
With the Qur’an in his hand, Prophet Muhammad gave shape to the nucleus of a universal society in the Arabia of those days, out of those scattered and cantankerous desert tribes, who had little by way of scientific knowledge or material resources.
Their initiation into a stable Islamic cultural order was effected independent of all the socio-political systems or powers existing in the world at that time.
The Qur’an was at the center of this unique spiritual revolution. All the factors required for forging unity among tribes, races and social classes, for the liberation of thought patterns and the ennobling of knowledge. Indeed all the criteria for social transformation were derived from the very text of the Qur’an and from the culture that emerged from the Qur’an.
Even aggressors who ravaged Islamic lands and triumphed over the Muslims owing to their military superiority, lost their dominance in the end when they were confronted with the spiritual power of Islam; and eventually, many of them adopted the religion of the people they had conquered.
