Tayammum (Purification With Soil)
The time for Tayammum (When can one do Tayammum ?)
A person in need of bathing or ablution must do “Tayammum” if he is incapable of using water. Some important conditions of performing “Tayammum” are as follows:
There should be no sign (or knowledge) of water being available for a distance of at least one mile, in all the four directions.
An illness that would get severely aggravated or get prolonged upon using water. This could be the person’s own judgment from experience or the opinion of a pious reliable doctor.
The extreme cold which could cause the person to die or fall ill if he takes a bath, and no warm blankets are available to keep out the cold after bathing.
The danger of missing the train or bus etc., if he alights from it in order to use water.
Danger of missing the Fajr (Dawn) Prayer or the congregational Prayers of Eid.
Method and some important rules regarding Tayammum
Three things are obligatory in “Tayammum”
- Making an intention (Niyah) that the particular “Tayammum” is for ablution or for bath or for both.
- Passing soiled palms over the entire face, not leaving out a single spot equal to the breadth of a hair.
- Passing soiled palms over both arms up to and including the elbows, not leaving out a single spot equal to the breadth of a hair.
At first, make an intention and after reciting “Bismillah Shareef”, strike the hands on any solid matter which is related to the earth i.e. soil, mud, stones, marble, or any such thing upon which is considerable dust. If the hands get soiled with too much dust, strike the base of one thumb upon the base of the other to loosen it. Then pass both hands over the entire face, not leaving out even a single spot equal to the breadth of a hair. The area around the lips which remains exposed in the natural state when the mouth is closed should also be covered in this “Masah”. If the person is bearded, he should then run his fingers through the beard.
Strike the hands again on the soil. Now perform “Masah” of the right arm, by placing the inner portion of all fingers, except the thumb, on the outer portion of the right arm. Pass the left-hand fingers over the fingertips of the right arm up to the elbow. Coming back from the elbow pass the palm over the inner side of the right arm up to the wrist. Then do “Masah” of the right thumb using the inner side of the left thumb. Similarly, repeat the entire process for the left arm.
While striking the palms on the soil or mud, the fingers must be kept open. If dust has reached between the fingers, “Khilaal” should be done (by rubbing other fingers between them). If the palm had been struck on stone or other such things by which dust does not reach between the fingers, then ‘Khilaal’ becomes obligatory.
Women should take extra care during “Tayammum” by moving ornaments (such as rings) in order not to leave the area below them – whereas nail polish should be totally removed.
If cold water is harmful to sickness, warm water should be used if available. If warm water is unavailable, “Tayammum” should be done.
If any portion is covered by a bandage (or plaster) because of an injury, then “Masah” with wet hands should be done over such bandage – and the rest of the body washed as usual with water. If pouring water does not cause harm, water should be poured over such a bandage. In due course, if it is not harmful to do “Masah” over the injured part, “Masah” should be adopted immediately. Later when washing the injured portion will not cause harm, it will become obligatory to wash it. It should therefore be understood that when the ability exists, the superior act must be performed and the lesser act will no more suffice.
If very little time is left for offering Prayer, and it is feared that the time will lapse if one takes a bath or performs ablution, one must perform the “Tayammum” and offer the Prayer. It is however incumbent to repeat such Prayer after proper bathing or ablution.
If the excuse due to which “Tayammum” was done does not remain anymore, it will make the “Tayammum” invalid. The occurrence of anything that breaks the ablution will also break the “Tayammum” which was done in place of ablution. Similarly the occurrence of anything which makes bathing compulsory will break the “Tayammum” which was done in place of bathing.
The Holy Prophet Muhammed Salalaahu Alaihi wasallam: The Earth Has Been Made For Me
Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 7, Number 331:
Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah: The Prophet said, “I have been given five things which were not given to anyone else before me.
1. Allah made me victorious by awe, (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month’s journey.
2. The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place for praying and a thing to perform Tayammum, therefore anyone of my followers can pray wherever the time of a prayer is due.
3. The booty has been made Halal (lawful) for me yet it was not lawful for anyone else before me.
4. I have been given the right of intercession (on the Day of Resurrection).
5. Every Prophet used to be sent to his nation only but I have been sent to all mankind.
Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 7, Number 331:
Had the Holy Prophet Muhammed Salalaahu Alaihi wasallam not been there niether Adam , not the sky nor the earth would have been created , everything was created for him , even all humanity , all animals , all birds , every microorganism living on the planet,
The Universe has been created for him , He was the first of all creations
Personal Hygiene In Islam
Muslims enjoy the highest standard of personal hygiene of all the people in the world. In Islam, cleanliness and purification are not only requirements for the performance of worship, or when embracing Islam, but are part of a Muslim’s very faith. Allah says in the Qur’an: “Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts, bodies, for their prayers, etc.).” (Al Baqarah: 222)
Cleanliness in Islam is of three kinds:
1- Purification from impurity (i.e. to attain purity or cleanliness, by taking a bath ghusl or performing ablution wudu’ in states in which a bath or ablution is necessary or desirable according to Islamic Law.
2- Cleansing one’s body, dress, or place from an impurity of filth.
3- Removing the dirt or grime that collects in various parts of the body, such as cleaning the teeth and nostrils, trimming nails, and removing armpit and pubic hair.
Ghusl
This is when all parts of the body are thoroughly washed. Ghusl is required of every Muslim after sexual intercourse, after wet dreams, after child-birth, and after post-partum bleeding (40-days flow of blood, and final yellowish discharge has completely stopped), and each month after menstruation and final yellowish discharge have stopped.
Wudu
1- after urinating or defecating
2- if one breaks the wind
3- if one falls asleep lying down
4- if one loses consciousness
The above cases also nullify one’s ablution, requiring a fresh one. Allah says in the Qur’an: “O you who believe! When you intend to offer prayer, wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles. If you are in a state of Janaba, purify yourself (bathe your whole body)….” (Al-Ma’idah: 6)
Also on this issue, Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) quoted Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying, “The prayer of a person who does hadath (passes, urine, stool or wind) is not accepted until he performs (repeats) the ablution.” A person from Hadaramout asked Abu Hurairah, “What is ‘hadath’?” Abu Hurairah replied, “‘Hadath’ means the passing of wind from the anus.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 4, Number 137)
Merits of ablution:
Part of the merits of ablution is that it earns Muslims a special name by which they will be called on the Day of Judgment; the name is Al-Ghurr-ul-Muhajjalun (People of shinning bodily parts), due to performing ablution in proper way. Nu’aim Al-Mujmir reported: “Once I went up the roof of the mosque along with Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). He performed ablution and said, ‘I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be called Al-Ghurr-ul-Muhajjalun from the traces of ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so (by performing ablution in the most perfect manner.'” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, vol. 1, hadith No. 138)
Tayamum (Dry Ablution)
This is performed by putting or striking lightly the hands over clean earth and then pass the palm of each on the back of the other, blow off the dust then pass them on the face. It is performed instead of wudu and ghusl (in case of ritual impurity, etc.). Allah says in the Qur’an: “… But if you are ill or on a journey or any of you comes from answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (i.e., sexual intercourse) and you find no water, then perform tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands. Allah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favor on you that you may be thankful.” (Al-Ma’idah: 6)
To illustrate the importance of Muslims maintaining their high level of personal hygiene, the following points are specifically mentioned by Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) on answering the call of nature.
`A’ishah, the Mother of the Faithful (may Allah be pleased with her): “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used his right hand for getting water for ablution and taking food, and his left hand for his evacuation and for anything repugnant.” (Sunan Abu Dawud)
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Be on your guard against two things which provoke cursing.’ They (the Companions present there) said: ‘Messenger of Allah, what are those things which provoke cursing?’ He said: ‘Easing on the thoroughfares or under the shades (where people take shelter and rest).'” (Reported by Muslim)
