The Day Of Arafah: The Day That Allah Completed His Favor Upon Us
A day preferred over all other days; a day in which sins are forgiven and supplications are answered; a day in which Allah descends from His throne and says to the angels:‘What do these people desire and seek?’
It is befitting therefore that we, as Muslims, know about this day and appreciate its virtue.
Corresponding to 9th Dhul Hijjah, wherein our brothers and sisters who have departed to perform Hajj stand together, Arafah remains the core and essence of Hajj. This day Allah descends to the nearest heaven, and He is proud of His slaves on the earth and says to those in heaven:“Look at My servants. They have come from far and near, with hair disheveled and faces covered with dust, to seek My mercy…”
Virtues
1. Allah perfected His religion on this day and completed his favor upon us.
“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”(Quran 05:03)
Umar(may Allah be pleased to him) said regarding the above ayah, ‘We know the day and place in which [this verse] was revealed to the Prophet(salAllaahu alayhi wa sallam). It was when he was standing in Arafah on a Friday.’
2. Allah took an oath on this day. He said:{By the witnessing day, and by the witnessed day}(Quran 85:03)
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet(sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “The witnessed days are the Day of Arafah.”
It is known that Allah would only take an oath by something of great importance.
3. It is the best day and the most beloved day to Allah in the year.
Jaabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allaah(sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “And there is no day better in the sight of Allah than the Day of `Arafah…”.
4. Allah frees more people from the hellfire.
Muslim and others have reported from Aisha that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Allah frees more people from the Hellfire on the Day of ‘Arafah than on any other day, and Allah draws closer this day and proudly says to the angels, ‘What do these people want and seek?’”
5. It is a day held dear to ALL the prophets before us.
The Messenger of Allaah(sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “The best supplication is that of the Day of ‘Arafah, and the best thing that I and other Prophets before me said, is: ‘La ilaaha ill Allahu, wahdahu la shareeka lahu. Lahul mulk wa lahul hamd wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shayin qadeer.'”
For those not performing Hajj
To attain the reward of this blessed day, and thereby follow the example of the Prophets who came before, one should:
1. Fast the day of Arafah
Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (salAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Fasting the day of Arafah expiates the sins of two years: the past one and the coming one.”
One should therefore fast on this day, and encourage friends and family to fast so that our sins may be forgiven, and we may be favored amongst the righteous servants of Allah.
2. Supplicate to Allah
The prophet(sal Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The best of supplications is the supplication on the Day of Arafah”
3. Make remembrance of Allah -praising and glorifying him.
Ibn Umar states:‘we were with the Prophet on the Day of Arafah. Some of us would glorify Allah (by saying Allah Akbar) whilst others would praise Allah (by sayingLaa ilaaha illa Allaah).
Through the above, the benefits, blessings, and favors of the pilgrim are shared and Allah draws near; His Generosity and Kindness overflowing, as He boasts to His angels:
“He says, My slaves have come to me so lovingly,
and indeed I am, to them, most Kind and Merciful,
Bear witness, I have forgiven their sins,
blessed them and granted them their hopes.”

With Whom Is Allah?
(1) Allah Is With Those Who Patiently Persevere (Saabireen)
O ye who believe! Seek help with patient perseverance and prayer; for Allah is with those who patiently persevere. [2:153]
And obey Allah and His Messenger. And fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering: For Allah is with those who patiently persevere: [8:46]
Now Allah has lightened your burden, for He knows that there is weakness in you. So if there are a hundred steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred. And if there be one thousand, they will overcome two thousand, by Allah’s Will. And Allah is with the steadfast. [8:66]
When Talut set forth with the armies, he said: “(Allah) will test you at the stream: if any drinks of its water, He goes not with my army: Only those who taste not of it go with me: A mere sip out of the hand is excused.” but they all drank of it, except a few. When they crossed the river,- He and the faithful ones with him,- they said: “This day We cannot cope with Goliath and his forces.” but those who were convinced that they must meet Allah, said: “How oft,
by Allah’s will, Hath a small force vanquished a big one? Allah is with those who steadfastly persevere.” [2:249]
(2) Allah Is With Those Who Believe (Mumineen)
If you [disbelievers] seek the victory – the defeat has come to you. And if you desist [from hostilities], it is best for you; but if you return [to war], We will return, and never will you be availed by your [large] company at all, even if it should increase; and [that is] because Allah is with the believers. [8:19]
(3) Allah Is With Those Who Restrain Themselves (Muttaqeen)
O ye who believe! Fight the unbelievers who gird you about, and let them find firmness in you: and know that Allah is with those who fear Him. [9:123]
[Fighting in] the sacred month is for [aggression committed in] the sacred month, and for [all] violations is legal retribution. So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.. [2:194]
(4) Allah is with those who those who do good. (Muhsinoon)
For Allah is with those who restrain themselves, and those who do good. [16:128]

The Prophet Mohammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon him) And His Companions Real Life Story
1. SACRIFICE OF THE LAMB: Just as the Prophet (S.A.W.), and his companions landed from their rides, and
laid the loads down, it was decided that they would sacrifice a lamb for dinner.
One of the companions volunteered: “I will sacrifice the lamb.” Another: “I will skin it.” Third: “I will cook it.”
Fourth: ” I will….” The Prophet (S.A.W.): “I will gather the wood from the desert.”
The group: “O Messenger of Allah, it is not becoming of you to discomfort yourself as such. You rest. We will be honored to do all this on our own.”
The Prophet (S.A.W.): “I know that you are eager to do it all, but Allah isn’t pleased with the slave who distinguishes between himself and his companions and considers himself better than others.”
Then he went to the desert, and gathered some wood, and brought it to the group.
2. TYING THE CAMEL: The caravan had been traveling for a few hours now. Signs of fatigue were obvious on their faces. They arrived at a point and stopped. The Prophet (S.A.W.) who was also in the caravan, stopped the camel and landed. Before anything, they were in search of water to prepare for prayer.
The Prophet (S.A.W.) also started searching for water. But soon, returned to his camel, without saying anything to anyone. The companions were surprised that the Prophet (S.A.W.) had ordered stopping here, and now perhaps he would like to move again. Eyes and ears were awaiting his order. But the surprise of the group increased as they saw him approach his camel, tie its knees, and return in search of water.
Noises were raised from every corner: “O Prophet of Allah! Why didn’t you order us to do this for you, and instead you put yourself in discomfort? We would have proudly done that service for you.”
The Prophet (S.A.W.) responded: “Never seek others’ help in your affairs, don’t lean on others, even if it is a small piece of Miswak (the wood used for brushing teeth).”
- TELLING THE TRUTH: Telling the truth is a very good habit. If you always speak the truth, you can save yourself from a lot of trouble! Here is a story of a man who did a lot of bad things, but his promise to tell the truth saved him.
Once a man came to the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and said, “Oh prophet of Allah, I have many bad habits. Which one of them should I give up first?” The prophet said, “Give up telling lies first and always speak the truth.” The man promised to do so and went home. At night the man was about to go out to steal. Before setting out, he thought for a moment about the promise he made with the prophet. “If tomorrow the prophet asks me where have I been, what shall I say? Shall I say that I went out stealing? No, I cannot say that. But nor can I lie. If I tell the truth,
everyone will start hating me and call me a thief. I would be punished for stealing.”

Three Things Follow The Bier Of A Dead Man
[Sahih Muslim : Book 42 “Kitab Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqa’iq”, Number 7061]
Mutarrif (Radi Allah Anhu) reported on the authority of his father: I came to Allah’s Apostle (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) as he was reciting: “Abundance diverts you” He said (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam): “The son of Adam claims: My wealth, my wealth. And he (the Holy Prophet) said: O son of Adam. Is there anything as your belonging except that which you consumed, which you utilized, or which you wore, and then it was worn out, or you gave as charity and sent it forward?”
[Sahih Muslim : Book 42 “Kitab Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqa’iq”, Number 7063]
Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu) reported Allah’s Messenger (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) as saying: “A servant says, My wealth. My wealth, but out of his wealth three things are only his: whatever he eats and makes use of or by means of which he dresses himself, and it wears out, or he gives as charity, and this is what he stored for himself (as a reward for the Hereafter), and what is beyond this (it is of no use to you) because you are to depart and leave it for other people. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of al-‘Ala’ b. ‘Abd al-Rahman with the same chain of transmitters.”
[Sahih Muslim : Book 42 “Kitab Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqa’iq”, Number 7064]
Anas b. Malik (Radi Allah Anhu) reported Allah’s Messenger (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) as saying: “Three things follow the bier of a dead man. Two of them come back and one is left with him: the members of his family. Wealth and his-good deeds. The members of his family and wealth come back, and the deeds alone are left with him.”
Our Lord! Accept from us; surely Thou art the hearing, the Knowing.

4. Narrated Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila: Ka`b bin Ujrah met me and said, “Shall I not give you a present I got from the Prophet?” Abdur-Rahman said, “Yes, give it to me.” I said, “We asked Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) saying, ‘O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! How should one (ask Allah to) send blessings on you, the members of the family, for Allah has taught us how to salute you (in the prayer)?’ He said, ‘Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! 5. It was narrated from Musa bin Talha, from his father, that: A man came to the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: “How should we send blessings upon you, O Prophet of Allah?’ He said: ‘Say: Alahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita ‘ala Ibrahima wa barik ‘ala Muhammad kama barakta ‘ala ali Ibrahim fil-‘alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'” (Hasan) [Sunan an-Nasa’i, Book #13, Hadith #113]
6. Abu Humaid as-Sa’idi reported: They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) said: Apostle of Allah, how should we bless you? 7. It was narrated that Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah said: ‘We said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we know about sending salams upon you, but how should we send salah upon you?” He said: ‘Say: Alahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita ‘ala Ibrahima wa barik ‘ala Muhammad kama barakta ‘ala ali Ibrahim fil-‘alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim, and send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim among the nations.. You are indeed Worthy of praise, Full of glory.)'” (One of the narrators) ‘Abdur Rahman said: “We used to say: ‘And also upon us.'” Abu Abdur-Rahman (An Nasa’i) said: This is more worthy of being correct than the one that is before it. And we do not know of anyone who said “Amr bin Murrah” in it other than in this case. And Allah (SWT) knows best. (Sahih)
[Sunan an-Nasa’i, Book #13, Hadith #110]
8. Abu Muhammad Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) came to us and we asked him, “O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you (i.e., say As-salamu ‘alaikum), but how should we supplicate for you?” He (PBUH) said, “Say: ‘Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin, wa ‘ala ‘ali Muhammadin, kama sallaita ‘ala ‘ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid. Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin, wa ‘ala ‘ali Muhammadin, kama barakta ‘ala ‘ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid [O Allah, exalt the mention of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as you exalted the family of Ibrahim. You are Praised and Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are Praised and Glorious.”‘ [Riyad as-Salihin, Book #15, Hadith #1405]
9. It was narrated that Abu Mas’ud Al-Ansari said: “It was said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): We have been commanded to send salah and salams upon you. We know how to send salams, but how should we send salah?’ He said: Say: ‘Alahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala ali Muhammad, kama sallaita ‘ala Ibrahima wa barik ‘ala Muhammad kama barakta ‘ala ali Ibrahim fil-‘alamin, innaka hamidun majid (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent salah upon the family of Ibrahim).'” (Sahih) [Sunan an-Nasa’i, Book #13, Hadith #108]

He (the Holy Prophet) said: Say:” O Allah: bless Muhammad and his family as Thou didst bless the family of Ibrahim. Verily Thou art Praiseworthy and Glorious, O Allah.” [Muslim, Book #4, Hadith #70]
11. Narrated Abu Huraira: Once while a Jew was selling something, he was offered a price that he was not pleased with. So, he said, “No, by Him Who gave Moses superiority over all human beings!” Hearing him, an Ansari man got up and slapped him on the face and said, “You say: By Him Who Gave Moses superiority over all human beings although the Prophet (peace be upon him) (Muhammad) is present amongst us!” The Jew went to the Prophet and said, “O Abu-l-Qasim! I am under the assurance and contract of security, so what right does so-and-so have to slap me?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked the other, “Why have you slapped”. He told him the whole story… The Prophet (peace be upon him) became angry, till anger appeared on his face, and said, “Don’t give superiority to any prophet amongst Allah’s Prophets, for when the trumpet will be blown, everyone on the earth and in the heavens will become unconscious except those whom Allah will exempt. The trumpet will be blown for the second time and I will be the first to be resurrected to see Moses holding Allah’s Throne. I will not know whether the unconsciousness which Moses received on the Day of Tur has been sufficient for him or has he got up before me. And I do not say that there is anybody who is better than Yunus bin Matta.” [Bukhari, Book 60, Hadith 87]
And Remember ALLAH’S Command [Quran – 2:136] “Say, [O believers], “We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.”
[Quran – 2:285] “The Messenger believeth in what hath been revealed to him from his Lord, as do the men of faith. Each one (of them) believeth in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. “We make no distinction (they say) between one and another of His messengers.” And they say: “We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys.”
[Quran – 3:84] “Say (O Muhammad): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and that which was vouchsafed unto Moses and Jesus and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered.”
And Remember Allah’s Promise
[Quran – 4:152 – Shakir] “And those who believe in Allah and His messengers and do not make a distinction between any of them– Allah will grant them their rewards; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”
Be Not Of Those Who Will Be Condemned By The Prophet (PBUH)
[Quran – 25:30] “And the Messenger will say, “O my Lord, my people had made this Qur’an the object of their ridicule.”
Be Not Of Those Who Ignore Allah’s Unequivocal Declaration
[Quran – 98:7] “Those who believe and do good deeds are the best of creation.”
